Rome on June 2, 2026: Republic Day Parade, Free Museums and Everything You Need to Know

June 2nd is one of the most spectacular days to be in Rome. Italy's National Day — the Festa della Repubblica — fills the city with ceremony, colour and the kind of collective energy that only a major national celebration can produce. In 2026, the occasion is particularly significant: it marks the 80th anniversary of the referendum that transformed Italy from a monarchy into a republic on June 2, 1946.

If you are in Rome on this day, here is exactly what to expect — and how to make the most of it.

The Parade Along Via dei Fori Imperiali

The heart of the celebration is the military parade along Via dei Fori Imperiali — the wide ceremonial road that runs between Piazza Venezia and the Colosseum, flanked by the ruins of the Imperial Fora on both sides.

The programme begins at 9:15am with President Sergio Mattarella laying a wreath at the Altare della Patria in honour of the Unknown Soldier. The parade then moves along Via dei Fori Imperiali from 9:10am to noon, featuring military regiments, civilian corps of the state, international delegations and military bands.

Tribune seats along the parade route are available free of charge — a maximum of 4 per person — and can be reserved in advance through the official online platform. A dedicated section is reserved for visitors with disabilities and their companions.

The Frecce Tricolori

The moment the entire city looks skyward: the Frecce Tricolori — Italy's national aerobatic display team, the Pattuglia Acrobatica Nazionale — will fly over the historic centre of Rome toward the end of the morning. Ten jets in formation will trace the green, white and red of the Italian flag across the sky above the city's rooftops.

The Frecce Tricolori hold the world record for the largest number of jets flying in a military aerobatic formation — a record certified by Guinness World Records. The flyover is one of the most photographed moments of the entire year in Rome.

The best viewing positions are anywhere along Via dei Fori Imperiali, on the steps of the Altare della Patria in Piazza Venezia, or on any elevated terrace with an open view of the sky over the city centre.

Free Entry to All State Museums on June 2

On June 2, 2026, all state museums, archaeological parks and cultural sites are open free of charge to the public during their normal opening hours, with reservation required where normally applicable. The list of participating sites includes the Colosseum, the Fori Imperiali, the Galleria Borghese, Castel Sant'Angelo, and Villa Adriana in Tivoli, among many others.

This is an exceptional opportunity to visit Rome's major monuments without the standard entry fees. If you plan to visit the Colosseum on June 2, reserve your free timed entry in advance — the monument will be significantly more visited than usual. Reservations can also be made in person at the P.STOPS INFOPOINTS located across the city.

The Evening Celebration at the Quirinale

In the evening, Piazza del Quirinale will host "I Volti della Repubblica" — a large-scale event celebrating the 80th anniversary with performances by musicians, dancers, actors and Italian sporting champions, against the backdrop of the illuminated Palazzo del Quirinale draped in the Tricolore. The event will be broadcast live on Rai Uno from 9pm.

Plan Your Day: Tours, Tickets and Practical Services

June 2nd brings an exceptional concentration of visitors to Rome — both Italian and international. The P.Stops InfoPoints across the city are your most practical resource for organising the day on the ground.

At each P.STOPS INFOPOINT you can purchase or collect your ROMA PASS (72 hours at €58.50 or 48 hours at €36.50), which includes unlimited public transport across the city and discounted entry to Rome's top museums. You can also buy COLOSSEUM TICKETS, VATICAN MUSEUMS TICKETS and ATAC PUBLIC TRANSPORT TICKETS directly, without online queues or additional fees. Free WiFi and drinking water are available at every location.

The P.Stops InfoPoints are located at the following addresses across the city:

PIAZZA SAN GIOVANNI IN LATERANO — steps from the Colosseum and Rome's oldest basilica

VIA GIUSEPPE ZANARDELLI — steps from Piazza Navona, near the historic centre

PIAZZA DELL'ESQUILINO — near Santa Maria Maggiore and the central transport hub

LARGO DI VILLA PERETTI — at Roma Termini station, the city's main transport interchange

VIALE CARLO FELICE — in the San Giovanni neighbourhood

All InfoPoints open at 8:30am — earlier than most tourist services in the city, making them the ideal first stop before the parade begins.

An Exclusive Roman Souvenir — Only Here

If you are looking for a souvenir that is genuinely unique to Rome and genuinely unavailable anywhere else, the P.Stops InfoPoints are the only physical retail points in the city where you can find the full RomAntica Design collection.

RomAntica Design is a Roman brand that transforms the city's most iconic monuments — the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Castel Sant'Angelo, Spanish Steps — into premium thermal water bottles with original artistic designs and exclusive collectible packaging. Every element of the product, from the bottle to the packaging to the shopping bag, was designed to be kept, not discarded: a deliberate counterpoint to the throwaway souvenir culture that surrounds most tourist destinations.

The bottles are not sold in souvenir stalls, not available in airport shops, and not distributed through mass retail. They are exclusively available at the P.Stops InfoPoints listed above and online at ROMANTICADESIGN.COM — designed in Rome, for those who want to take a piece of the city home in a form that reflects its design and its history.

On a day when Rome is at its most alive, the right souvenir is one that carries that story forward.
